Racism in Film Essay - 2717 Words
Racism in Film Throughout the history of film in the United States, the depiction of race has only changed slightly. Although, the display of various races in film is pertinent to the specific time period in which the film was made, films have, for the most part, always portrayed white superiority over other races. People of color have traditionally been presented in a negative way (if presented at all) that helps to maintain the status quo where whites are at the top of the social hierarchy. A few common methods are used to elicit the issues and depiction of race, in the films, One Flew Over the Cuckooââ¬â¢s Nest, Glory, and Bamboozled. According to Stephanie Larson, the three common methods that are used in film to depict racialâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In fact, all but one of the doctors and nurses in the entire mental institution are white, the exception being an Indian doctor (from India). While all of the esteemed employees are white, the workers who have less significa nt jobs are all black. This presents an imbalance between two races and depicts the whites as having a white privilege. The inequality between the two races is a system-supportive theme that depicts blacks in a negative way, and promotes the status quo and white superiority over blacks. Blacks are selectively excluded and stereotyped in a negative way throughout the entirety of the film, One Flew Over the Cuckooââ¬â¢s Nest. The black workers have very few lines in the movie and their main function is to subdue patients when they get out of control. Since they have a very limited role in the film, it is not possible to recognize any characteristics of these characters. There are acts of violence in most scenes that the blacks are included in. Therefore, the audience is inclined to make generalizations about blacks as a whole. Also, the black workers take orders from Nurse Ratched and the other white staff members and carry out whatever they are told to do. This represents the supe riority of whites. This film is racist towards blacks because they have no major role in the film, are seen as violent, and act solely as the pawns for Nurse Ratched and the rest of the white crew. Reflective Writing Gibbs Reflective Model
Question: Discuss about theReflective Writingfor Gibbs Reflective Model. Answer: Gibbs reflective model is a reflective model that is often followed by nurses to reflect their practices (Lagen, 2015). It usually helps in breaking one or more experiences in to a number of steps that helps a nurse to describe her experiences sequentially, reflect on the positive or negative experiences and thereby learn from these aspects. The first step is the description process. While working in the group for making the poster and also to provide care for patients with different cultural backgrounds, I have found a lot of things. I have experienced that there was a lack of collaborative approach that had affected the quality care that we could have provided. I also understood that I have a habit of conducting my own work without discussing or consulting with other which affected the poster making activity that was given to us. The second step is the feeling that I harbored at that time. I had no idea about how to treat culturally competent patients and was not being able to initiate my learning procedure. This was mainly because I was very conservative in my approach and was feeling that the other nurses would think me to be less capable if I go and ask for help. I had a feeling that if I am not being able to provide good knowledge and suggestions while special treatment requires for culturally competent people , I would be laughed over. My inferiority complex made me remain away from such approaches towards my colleagues. The third step is evaluation. While making the project I understood that I really lack a lot of knowledge about how a culturally different patient should be approached. But I was not being able to reveal it to the other members as it would have hurt my ego. This had a negative impact on my self confidence as I was not being able to develop my skills that are important for providing person centered care. However I was not ready to give up as a patients health would have been might utmost priority and therefore I should have kept aside my complexes and take part in active group activity The fourth step is analysis. I analyzed that sticking to ego will not help me to move further in my career. My most important aim would be to develop knowledge about how culturally competent patients should be handled. I understood that is extremely important for me to overcome my inhibitions and communicate with my fellow colleagues to prepare the poster for a collaborative approach. I understood that if I have to succeed well with proper development of knowledge and how to treat patients, I should work in cooperation with my friends. I understood very well that they will help me to overcome my gap in knowledge where I was shaky. They will also provide me with effective feedback that will help me to develop the skill of working in a team. The fourth step is conclusion. From this entire episode, I decided that I should overcome my insecurity because it will hold me back and will never help me to develop my skills about how to work in a group. I need to overcome my negative feelings and develop my skills in working in a collaborative practice. I would also like to develop my ability so that I can gather different knowledge about how to treat culturally competent patient with a good collaborative approach from all colleagues. This would enhance my knowledge and skills and help me work as a team. This would help in overcoming any challenges that one can face while culturally different people. My action plan would be to discuss my issues with my team members and gather effective feedback from them. I decided to develop a planning procedure about how each of the team members will help me in giving their point of views in treating culturally different patients and how I can develop my skill in poster making and treating patients. I will also approach them in order to participate in a coordinated collaborative practice and hence this action plans would help me overcome the issues. In this way, with the help of the Gibbs reflective model I was able to critically reflect myself and got the scope to develop my work. Oriental Art Essays - Chinese Pottery, Ceramic Art, Ceramics
Oriental Art Oriental art is very distinct from other parts of the world. In their sculptures they still used such materials as clay, wood, and bronzes. However there art work promoted such things as goodness in nature, serenity, graceful balance, spiritual perfection, and a mystical harmony within themselves. There work avoided confusion, conflict and violent emotions at all costs. New or unprecedented experiments in their art work was never welcomed, and the expression of nobility and inner worth where demanded. Ultimately oriental art was said to be a way of being, but to understand this you must look at the words of the great Chinese philosopher Confucius who said Raise yourself to the beautiful. However not all Oriental art is the same, and to see the difference and the influences of their art you need to look at the areas of China, Japan, and Korea. The Neolithic inhabitants of China were energetic in their pottery, and where the first to practice this art, in which China has remained supreme in until recent times. Not very much is known about the earliest Chinese craftsman or the society that produced them, other than the fact that they lived in pounded earth settlements in northern Honan, Shangtung, and Kansu. These early craftsman created fine pottery, and especially beautiful vessels for funerals which where used for food and other provisions for the dead. These craftsmen where taught to honor the five rulers who had taught their forefathers how to raise silk worms, catch fish, domesticate animals, plow, reap and use the wheel for transportation and for throwing pottery. The Shang people came into history half way through the second millennium B.C., these people also lived in pounded earth settlements, and made funeral vessels. These people established the li which was the basic metallic shape used in their bronzes. Not only was the li used, but also other shapes have been discovered. In recent excavations, thousands of different vessels have been found, however it is possible to distinguish about forty basic shapes of the vessels. Each vessel served a different purpose in sacrifice or funeral ceremonies. Some where used for wine and water, some for storing foods, while others where used for cooking meats. The Shang dynasty have left some sculptures as original and different as there bronzes. However none of the large statue survived excavations. The importance of the excavations cannot be overemphasized. Who would have imagined an ancient culture so rich that they actually created stone sculptures, wheel made pottery, carved jade, and bronzes, which have never been surpassed. Too often when people speak of Oriental art they think that both China and Japan developed in the same way and the same time. This statement however is false, and the Japanese art did not start till several years after Chinese art did. The first forms of Japanese art can be looked at through the Jomon people, who where nomadic hunters and fishers. A number of human figurines and fertility gods have been found, also vessels made by the coiled clay method. The name Jomon, actually means coiled rope. The figures made by these people seem to be very imaginative, and possibly inspired by a fear in supernatural forces. The figures where made to be viewed only from the front, and although there where simply molded, some did have very elaborate decorations. When contacts with Asia and China where made, the style of Buddhist art was developed. This new form inspired sculptors and painters to have totally new viewpoints on their art. The Korean society was extremely influenced by Chinese culture. This did not stop Korean artists and craftsman from making their own original and distinct contributions to the world of art. In an expedition in 1909 many tombs where unearthed. In them they found mirrors weapons, lacquer objects, pottery, and ritual jades. Most of these items however where said to be from China and this proved the close contacts between the two countries. The Great Silla period was the first and most interesting periods of Korean art. Things that where found during this period of time where openwork metal ornaments, jewelry, images and pendants, which where meant to word off evil spirits. Pottery was also very popular during
